Recommended Medical Consumer Information for Sports Medicine Patients

Whatever the playing field, whatever the injury, athletes of all ages trust the specialists at KOC to get them back in the game.

KOC has been, and continues to be, East Tennessee’s most trusted name in orthopaedic sports medicine. KOC’s roots in area athletics span years before sports medicine was even considered a specialty. As the most established orthopaedic group in Knoxville, we have proudly served as the orthopaedic surgeons for the University of Tennessee Athletic Department since 1949. And, as we continue that tradition, we are also pleased to provide sideline coverage to area high school athletes through our Athletic Trainer Outreach program. We also serve as the orthopaedic physicians for the Tennessee Smokies baseball team.

Concussion Care

Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic's staff of certified athletic trainers are often the first healthcare providers to identify and evaluate those with a possible concussion. KOC provides these licensed medical professionals to area high schools to help keep student athletes safe and healthy. This outreach endeavor allows coaches and players the benefit of having a valuable part of the KOC Concussion Care Team available during school, at practices, and on the sidelines of the games.

Athletic trainers work very closely with KOC's sports medicine physicians. Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic has two ImPACT certified concussion care providers, Dr. Joshua Johnson and Dr. Amber Luhn. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a neurocognitive assessment administered online in a controlled environment. ImPACT has two components, baseline testing and post-injury testing, which are used in conjunction to determine if a patient can safely return to an activity.

The Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic is a unique practice of specialty orthopaedics. This means that our physicians have each received advanced training in a very specific part of the body or area of orthopaedics and continue to accumulate years of intensive study within this specialty. By practicing exclusively within their respective specialty, our physicians are able to offer their patients a superior quality of diagnostic proficiency and, if needed, an unmatched level of surgical expertise.
