Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI is a diagnostic procedure that uses magnets and radio waves to make detailed pictures of inside the body. It is almost always performed on a convenient, outpatient basis.

An MRI can diagnose issues in all parts of the body, making it a versatile tool. Results are amazingly accurate and so precise that they often can differentiate between healthy and unhealthy tissue before symptoms even occur. It’s also safe since it does not require radiation.

The major advantages of an MRI are that no radiation is required, and it produces clear images to detect issues. It has been proven safe by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for use on an inpatient or outpatient basis.

Yes, but very few. Generally, the only people who should not have an MRI are those who are in the first trimester of pregnancy or have metallic IUDs, aneurysm clips or pacemakers.

Follow any pre-test instructions and, if your physician has ordered a contrast study, do not eat any solid food and drink only clear liquids for two hours before the exam.

You will be shown to a private dressing room where you will change into a gown and remove all jewelry. It’s recommended to not bring valuables or leave them with a loved one during your imaging appointment. You will be asked a few questions about your medical history, and the test will be explained before you begin.

An MRI is a large magnet that uses radio waves to develop internal images of your body and organs. The signals are analyzed by special computers to produce images that the radiologists will review to make a diagnosis.

The scan is totally painless. You will not feel anything, but you will hear a thumping sound similar to a drum roll. Earplugs are available if you need them. You will either recline in a chair with the affected body part in a cylinder or will lie on a table that slides into a large cylinder. You will be asked to stay as still as possible. Generally, the scan takes 30-45 minutes, depending on the area to be scanned.

If you need an X-ray or CT scan, those can be provided through your KOC physician’s office. An MRI requires a separate appointment. Your physician will determine the appropriate diagnostic tests for you and explain more.
