Luke Madigan, M.D.

Spine Specialist

Biography

As the son of an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Luke Madigan felt a strong calling toward medicine from an early age. After graduating with a B.S. in biology from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, he earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Madigan remained in Philadelphia for his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery. He then completed a fellowship in spine surgery at OrthoCarolina Spine Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Fascinated by the complexities of the spinal cord and inspired by the motivation and enthusiasm of his chief mentor at a busy spinal cord injury center, Dr. Madigan is pleased to serve at KOC as a spine specialist. He particularly enjoys seeing his patients return to their favorite activities and enjoy life again. His special interests within his field include cervical myelopathy, spinal cord injury and degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spines.

Dr. Madigan is married and has one son. In his leisure time he enjoys running, working out, home improvement projects and spending time with his family.

What patients say about Dr. madigan

  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can return to work and get back to my regular lifestyle. I had been referred to Dr. Madigan thinking it was my back, but he diagnosed me immediately as it being my hip. After a cortisone shot in my hip, I felt immediate relief.
    – Morris, Etowah
  • Thanks to my care at KOC and Dr. Madigan, I can sleep, go about everyday living; and, most important - fish Bass Tournaments (was going to add - without pain - but that goes without saying). Dr. Luke Madigan gets Best Back Doctor EVER! - vote as far as I'm concerned. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Madigan. As there are a handful of 67-year-old women in the country that fish competitively in Bass Tournaments; I was not sure if any doctor would take my back injury seriously. My number one priority was to get back to fishing but as the pain got worse, it also became about sleeping and going about daily chores. Dr. Madigan treated my sports injury and age with complete respect and I will always be grateful for that. Above all else he fixed the problem and the scheduled follow-up (physical therapy and appointments) were perfect. Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic is great is so many ways, but for elderly healthy people that still participate in a sport competitively, you have excelled for me and my husband. You will always have our recommendation and support because you treat older people "still out there" with respect.
    – Nancy, Knoxville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can resume my normal work and exercise routines. Dr. Luke Madigan certainly helped improve the quality of life I lead on a day to day basis. For 3 years, I had lower back pain with severe stiffness and numbness going down my leg. After consulting with Dr. Madigan, we decided on a more conservative option of an epidural steroid shot. It worked for a short bit. Dr. Madigan took his time with me each appointment, answering questions and explaining options. He never pressured me into surgery, which I greatly appreciated. After weighing the options, including another epidural shot, I decided to go with a foraminotomy. I am now running and dancing again. My energy and movement has increased dramatically. I highly recommend Dr. Madigan for a conservative, professional and thorough medical approach to lower back pain. I got my life back.
    – Susannah, Knoxville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can now move about my daily business without sciatic pain, which, at times, was all-encompassing and seemingly unending. I had developed a limp over several years assuming it was continuing issues with other arthritic hot-spots (have had knee and hip replacements as well as foot surgery). Despite therapy, the limp continued, then increasing pain. One month after spinal fusion surgery, I feel like the person I used to be, able to stride normally and without pain. THANK YOU, Dr. Madigan!!!

  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can enjoy wedding planning with my daughter, explore the caverns of Tennessee with my husband, and enjoy life again all at six weeks post-op! Prior to my surgery on February 23, 2018, tasks such as cleaning, shopping, standing, sitting, and walking were excruciating. I began seeing Dr. Madigan in December of 2017. He ordered an MRI which showed a herniated disc (L4 & L5). I recall during the holiday season of 2017 being unable to enjoy Christmas shopping with my daughter and other festivities due to being unable to stand or walk without pain for even a few moments. Dr. Madigan was not quick to suggest surgery as he and I both saw surgery as the last resort. I had an epidural injection at the end of January and sadly it was not effective. My daughter was engaged on February 10, 2018. This was a time of celebration and I knew I was not going to let my injury ruin my enjoying this moment. During my follow up appointment in February, Dr. Madigan and I spoke about what the next options were and decided surgery was the best option. I cannot thank Dr. Madigan enough for giving me my life back. Now I am able to enjoy the wedding planning with my daughter, explore caves with my husband, and enjoy life.

  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can look forward to a pain free day. The one thing in life I always knew was that I would never, ever have back surgery. It was my biggest fear and I did everything I could to take care that it would never happen. But as life would have it, that is exactly what I had to have at age 67. For a year I lived with back pain that I tolerated. Then 6 months ago, the pain became unbearable. I could only get some relief lying on the floor. This led me to KOC and Dr. Madigan. Dr. Madigan was informative and straightforward about my situation. He answered every question I had, and did not leave the room until he was sure I had all the knowledge I needed. Two months after my visit, I had a synovial cyst removed and a fusion. I was terrified, but Dr. Madigan's reputation and competent, confident manner allayed my fears. Immediately after the surgery, I was surprised at how little pain there was. Now, just three weeks later, I only take a Tylenol occasionally and am walking 2 miles daily. I know I have a way to go before I can resume the gardening that I love, but I have every confidence now that it will happen. But mostly, I am so relieved to have the pain I was in gone. I am so very thankful for Dr. Madigan and his surgical skill and that he is available to us in this region. Thank you, Dr. Madigan.
    – Mary, Greeneville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can now take a shower standing up and stand up to shave. I was kind of at the end of my rope. I had not been able to get any relief for months. I had been to a previous doctor who had done a fusion on my back a few years ago and through his different nurse practitioners had said there was nothing to be done except therapy. I did therapy and even went to a chiropractor for several months with no relief. Dr. Madigan was very polite and took time to actually take a look and find the problem. He then took the time to discuss the problem with me and my wife, answering questions and explaining the options. He did the surgery and I was able to go home that night. The pain in my legs is gone and for the first time in over six months I can now stand for over 2 minutes. I am 72 years old and Dr. Madigan is one of the best doctors that I have been to. Thank you again Dr. Madigan.

  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can walk again with no pain and I can finally sleep on my side. Dr. Madigan is a no beat around the bush doctor. I had back surgery recently after a lengthy journey trying to avoid it. Best decision I ever made. He explained everything to me in layman's terms and all the guidance throughout. Recovery was great and Dr. Madigan puts it out there with regard to progress - It's like - hey you've got to take care of yourself if you want to continue your healing journey. I like him - very personable, warm and friendly - and I'm healed!!! Thanks Dr. Madigan - you are an excellent surgeon and have a superb bed-side manner.
    – Debora, Knoxville
  • Thanks to my care at KOC, I can start to be on the road to recovery from constant neck pain. I had my neck fusion done at the Outpatient Surgery Center next to the West Office. Dr. Madigan was very informative and his knowledge of my procedure gave me confidence that I was at the right place. I’m glad he did my surgery and I would use him again. He is an excellent surgeon.
