When Ruthie Garner found out she needed surgery on her shoulder, she was relieved to learn she wouldn’t have to check into the hospital. Since she’s a patient of Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic and her surgery could be done as an outpatient, her operation was scheduled at Knoxville Orthopaedic Surgery Center (KOSC).
“The surgery center was very clean and everyone was just so nice to me,” Garner said. “Their whole process is very efficient. I had hardly been there 10 minutes before a nurse came to take me back to my private room. She stayed with me the whole time.”
Giving patients that convenient care in a state-of-the-art facility was the reason the doctors at KOC decided to open their own outpatient center.
“Operating here is so much easier for everyone,” said Dr. Douglas Calhoun, hand surgeon with KOC. “Everything is streamlined so our patients have the best possible experience while they’re here and then they’re home before they know it. The great news is that more procedures than ever before can be done without an overnight stay.”
Currently, KOSC offers everything from spinal injections to joint replacements, plus many shoulder, hand and foot procedures. Because the surgery center’s overhead is much lower than a hospital, patients are only charged for the services they need. That means they pay less for an atmosphere that’s more comfortable and inviting for both the patient and their family. In addition to a convenient West Knoxville location near I-40 and Pellissippi Parkway, there’s plenty of free, by-the-door parking.
“My husband loved the big, peaceful waiting area. They even gave him a pager so he knew right when I was done!” said Garner. “It seems like everyone there genuinely cares about you. My nurse even helped me get dressed before I left. I’ve never had that personal attention in a hospital setting.”
Garner says she tells everyone about her great experience at KOSC, especially recommending it to friends who are putting off surgery because of hospital anxiety.
